Lead
XRF analyzer
XRF analyzer is a handheld X-ray fluorescence device that reads the amount of lead in paint on a surface in seconds, without scraping, cutting or damaging the paint.
An XRF analyzer is the standard tool for finding lead in paint on site. The inspector presses the device against a wall, door or trim. It sends X-rays into the paint, and lead atoms send back a signal that the device converts into a reading.
One industry source describes it as a non-destructive method that reports lead in milligrams per square centimeter, usually in under 10 seconds, without removing or damaging the paint. That speed is why inspectors can test many surfaces in one visit.
For a building owner, the value is plain. You learn which surfaces have lead-based paint and which do not. That keeps repair budgets focused, and it avoids treating clean surfaces as hazards.
An XRF reading does not replace dust testing or a hazard plan. If results show a problem, the next step is a scope for lead abatement or lead-safe work under the RRP rule. Hire a certified inspector to run the test, and ask for the written report.
