Remediation

Soil remediation

Soil remediation is the treatment or removal of contaminated soil so that a site meets cleanup standards and can be safely used, sold or built on.

Soil remediation fixes ground that holds contaminants such as fuel, solvents, metals or PFAS. EPA notes that many remediation technologies exist for cleaning up contaminated sites, so the method depends on the contaminant, the soil type and the planned land use.

Common approaches fall into two groups. Some treat the soil in place. Others dig it out and treat it, or haul it to an approved facility. A site investigation comes first, so the crew knows what, where and how much.

Why this matters for Missouri owners: a contaminated lot can block a sale, a loan or a building permit. A buyer or lender will often ask for testing. A closed tank is a frequent source, as in an underground storage tank that leaked.

Get the facts early. Sample the soil, review the results with a qualified consultant, and choose a cleanup plan with a clear target. Keep all reports, because later buyers will ask for them.
