# Friable asbestos

Friable asbestos is material with more than 1 percent asbestos that crumbles to powder under hand pressure when dry, which makes it easy to release fibers into the air.

Friable asbestos is the highest-risk form in a building. Think of old pipe wrap, sprayed-on ceiling texture, or boiler insulation that flakes when touched. A person can crush it with their hand, so it sheds fibers with very little force.

Federal rules draw a hard line here. The EPA treats friable material as a regulated type of asbestos during renovation and demolition. See [regulated asbestos-containing material](https://aes.multisites.ai/glossary/regulated-asbestos-containing-material-racm) for what that means on a job.

For a Missouri building owner, the practical point is simple. Do not sweep, scrape, drill or cut a suspect material. Disturbing it can spread fibers through the whole building. Hire a certified inspector to sample it first. The lab result tells you whether the material is [asbestos-containing material](https://aes.multisites.ai/glossary/asbestos-containing-material-acm) at all.
