# Epoxy floor coating

Epoxy floor coating is a resin system applied to a prepared concrete slab that cures into a hard, seamless surface, often used in shops, warehouses and garages.

Epoxy is a resin system, and Sherwin-Williams places it in the group called resinous flooring. It says epoxy became the most successful resin in flooring in the mid-twentieth century because of its durability and strong adhesion.

Resinous products come in three basic types, by thickness: coatings of 4 to 30 mils, slurries of 30 to 250 mils, and mortars of 125 to 250 mils or more. A coating is the thinnest and often has no fillers.

The coating is only as good as the slab under it. The surface must be clean, sound and profiled through [concrete grinding](https://aes.multisites.ai/glossary/concrete-grinding), and the slab must be dry. Slab moisture pushes coatings off, so ask how it will be tested and whether a [moisture barrier](https://aes.multisites.ai/glossary/moisture-barrier) is needed.

Compared with [polished concrete](https://aes.multisites.ai/glossary/polished-concrete), epoxy gives you color, pattern and a sealed top layer, but Sherwin-Williams notes epoxy resins are typically very hard and can scratch fairly easily. Choose by use: forklifts, chemicals, looks and budget.
